Working Women: Performing the Balancing Act – An Introduction to Working from Home Part 3

So, you’ve decided that working from home may be the perfect solution for balancing home life and work life.

You may be thinking, “What could be better?” or “It will be the best of both worlds – I can be home with the kids when they need me and I’ll work when they don’t.”

But, it’s important to keep in mind that working from home will require a lot of balancing between two roles. You may be able to enjoy the benefits of working around your own schedule, but you’ll also have to balance working around housework, or sick kids or after-school activities.

But…the freedoms you’ll get in return can definitely be worth it.

Working Women: Time Management Tips for Work at Home Moms Part 2

I’ve shared with you my time management tips 1-3 for work at home moms. Now let’s take a look at tips 4 – 6.

Tip #4

Have a “safety net” built into your schedule.

Remember when you were back in college and you’d put off studying for that final exam or writing that term paper until the night before it was due. Back then, all you needed was a pot of coffee and a lot of midnight oil to burn.

But times have changed!

Now that you’re a work at home mom, you definitely have more on your plate than you did back during your college days. And, let’s face it; staying up all night to get needed work done when you have an impending deadline just isn’t practical.

That’s why it’s important to build a safety net into your schedule. If your client is expecting his report from you by Friday at 10am, why not make yourself get it done by Wednesday evening? By building a safety net into your schedule, you are able to better balance your work and family lives, particularly when you’re thrown a curve ball – like a sick child or a snow day.

Working Women: Time Management Tips for Work at Home Moms Part 3

Let’s wrap up our look this week at time management tips for work at home moms with tips 7-10.

Tip #7

Plan ahead for holidays and summer vacations.

Keep in mind when you’ll probably need to change your work schedule or even lighten your workload a bit around your kids’ school holidays and summer life.

As a work at home mom, it’s important that you add these dates to your calendar and begin planning around them far in advance so you don’t end up in crisis mode a week before school lets out for summer vacation.

Tip #8

Take advantage of little windows of opportunity.

Got 20 minutes before you have to leave for soccer practice? Is your toddler sleeping a few minutes longer than normal during naptime? Balance work and home life by taking advantage of the time to answer a couple of short e-mails or return a phone call or two. Maybe you can even take this time for yourself to have a coffee, meditate or take a deep breath. You’d be amazed at the simple things work at home moms have learned to get done in these little windows of time.

Tip #9
